Kalayaan Centre Presents Cartas de Amor
By: Judy Montenegro
In celebration of the 125th anniversary of the declaration of Philippine Independence, Kalayaan Cultural Community Centre presents Cartas de Amor, a musical about Jose Rizal, the national hero of the Philippines and his first love, Leonor Rivera.
Cartas de Amor is from the works of Josephine Roces Chavez. By way of letters and songs, the musical tells the tragic love story between Jose Rizal and his one true love, Leonor Rivera. Their romantic interlude began when Jose was eighteen and Leonor was in her teens, a relationship that existed under a veil of secrecy. When Jose left to pursue his studies in Europe, the correspondence continued until her parents discovered their relationship. Afraid that their daughter’s association with a filibuster may cause political upheaval, Leonor’s parents intercepted and destroyed all the letters between the lovers. Leonor was forced to marry an English engineer. Two years later, she died heartbroken. The play exemplifies the richness of Philippine music through the rendition of kundimans.
This performance was held on June 10, 2023, 7 PM at the Grand Hall of KCCC. Playing the lead characters in this musical are two professional and accomplished Filipino-Canadian artists – Leander Mendoza as Jose Rizal and Josephine Roces Chavez as Leonor Rivera.
KCCC is a non-profit organization and serves as a focal point for the celebration of Philippine culture and history as well as the enjoyment of a wide spectrum of programs and services for Filipino-Canadians in the GTA. Consular Outreach at Kalayaan Centre
by: Judy Montenegro
The Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Toronto conducted a Consular Outreach Mission at the Kalayaan Cultural Community Centre (KCCC) in Mississauga, Ontario on Saturday, 29 July 2023. This outreach has been an ongoing bi-annual activity between PCG and Kalayaan Centre and this is the first of two outreach events for the year.
The consular team was led by Consul Rodney Jonas Sumague and together with the PCG staff, the team was able to assist applicants who availed of the various consular services such as passport renewals, notarization of documents and re-acquisition of Philippine citizenship. An oathtaking ceremony was subsequently led by Consul Sumague at the Grand Hall of KCCC for former Philippine citizens who had re-acquired their citizenship. Family and friends of the dual citizens were able to witness the ceremony as the venue was open to all.
Since 2018, KCCC has organized these consular outreach events at KCCC and have received positive feedback from the community about the outreach. For residents in the Peel region and the surrounding areas, the venue is more accessible and convenient, especially for seniors. The Saturday schedule also makes it easier for applicants who work during the week to avail of these consular services as they do not have to take time off.
As an extension of the consular services, representatives from the Migrant Workers Office and SSS were also present to provide information about their office and answer inquiries on benefits or claims from the general public.
For those who are interested, the next consular outreach at Kalayaan Centre will be held on October 2023. Visit http://www.kalayaancentre.ca or the FB page https://www.facebook.com/kalayaancentre to be informed of the next outreach date at Kalayaan Centre.
